Road tripping in an electric vehicle is fundamentally different from petrol travel — not harder, just different. Instead of stopping at any petrol station you see, you plan charging stops in advance, usually at places where you'd want to stop anyway (restaurants, malls, scenic spots). With the right preparation, EV road trips are actually more relaxing because you know exactly where and when you'll stop.
Step 1 — Know Your EV's Real-World Range
Manufacturer range claims are tested under ideal conditions. Real-world range is typically 15–25% lower due to speed, temperature, air conditioning, hills, and payload. Use this as your planning baseline:

Step 2 — Map Your Charging Stops Before You Leave

Level 1 / Slow AC

Level 2 / Fast AC
7–22 kW. Adds 50–120 km/hour. Great for 2–4 hour stops at malls, restaurants, tourist spots.
DC Fast Charger
50–350 kW. Adds 100–500 km/hour. 20–45 min for 80%. Use at highway stops, petrol stations.
Step 4 — The 80% Rule
EV batteries charge fastest from 0–80%. Above 80%, the charging rate slows dramatically to protect battery health. On long trips, charge to 80% and leave — it's faster and better for your battery than waiting for 100%.
⚡ Exception: If your next charging stop is far and you need extra buffer, charge to 90–95%. Just don't make 100% a habit for daily driving.
Step 5 — Download Offline Maps
Highway stretches can have poor mobile coverage. Before leaving, download offline maps of your entire route on Google Maps or Maps.me. Also note the GPS coordinates of each planned charging stop — you can navigate to them even without internet.
Step 6 — Charge at Your Destination First
When you arrive at your hotel, restaurant, or tourist spot — plug in immediately if charging is available. Even a slow Level 2 charger adds significant range during a 2-hour lunch or overnight stay. This is "opportunity charging" and reduces the number of dedicated charging stops you need.
Step 7 — Pack These Essentials
- Type 2 portable charging cable — for hotels and slow charging points that don't provide cables

- Backup power bank — for your phone at the very least
- Charging adapters — if your region has multiple standards
